Etymology - Essay Example The word telephone dates back to the 18th century when it was developed. The word telephone is the combination of different traditional languages. It is derived from the old language of Greek. The word telephone is made by combining two different words. These two words are tele and phone. The word tele in Greek means 'far away' and the word phone means 'voice or sound'. Both these words combine to give the word telephone which was designed to transmit the voice of individuals to far away places. The roots of the word 'telephone' are yet not specifically known. Even though it is assumed that French was the language which gave birth to the word of 'telephone'. Firstly the word 'telephone' was used for a gadget which produced sound waves. The gadget produced different frequencies of sound waves. This device was made by Sudre in 1828. The word telephone was initially used for this gadget but later on was used on for another device. This device was used in different ships to signal the ot her ships of their location. This instrument is also known as a signaling device in English. Telephone was the word given to this device as again the signals being transmitted by the ships were a way of communication between the ships. Similarly after a certain span of years a communication gadget was predicted by P. Reis in 1861. This communication tool was predicted to have the name of 'telephone' by P. Reis. In 1877 Graham Bell made his famous invention of a gadget through which people could transmit their voices. This gadget was later on named 'telephone' by Graham Bell himself in 1876. This word got its level of a verb in 1878. The verb 'telephone' means 'to speak to someone by the use of telephone'. The word telephone can be defined as a gadget which is used to have telephonic conversations. It can be further divided into a verb a noun and an adjective. The verb of the word 'telephone' means to telephone a friend i.e. a particular action of calling a friend. When we analyze a word from etymological concept we need to know search out the origin of the word. As we use the word "Book", from an etymological point of view, book was used as "* bc" -"in Old English. bc" is adopted from Germanic word "*bk-", which means "beech tree." In the same way, the old English form of book, i.e. bc has Germanic origin, *bk-, "written document, book." 'Book' and 'beech' are twigs of the same tree. Both words have Germanic origin, which is *bk-, which means 'beech tree' from an Indo-European perspective. The meaning of book hence can be said as beech tree and it is because of the fact that people of Germany, in early ages, used to write on the stripes of beech tree. The same origins of 'book' are found in Latin. 'Liber' is the word for 'book' in Latin. 'Liber' meant 'bark', that is the smooth inner bark of a tree. Early Romans used to write and state on the bark of a tree and hence Liber was used to identify the thing we call "Book" in English these days. Book refers to a number of papers printed, written, and blank or with images combined together usually fastened or hinged at one side. Every paper of the book is known as a leaf and every side of the leaf is called a page. Books are meant to convey some idea or information. This was a major reason why there was a large migration of Japanese to Hawaii. As a result, from 1900, a majority of Japanese in U.S live in Hawaii. Over 30,000 Japanese moved to Hawaii, single men being the majority. They practiced farming and farm laborers, who immigrated as sojourners instead of settlers. A Historical Recording of a Fictitious Story Essay Example for Free
A Historical Recording of a Fictitious Story Essay One powerful factor in effective storytelling lies in the strong characterization of the figures in the story, and the novel, ââ¬Å"Don Quixoteâ⬠sustains this factor. In the beginning of the novel, Miguel de Cervantes warns his ââ¬Å"idle readersâ⬠(Cervantes, page __) that he simply wants to relate the story of a stepson who lived a ridiculous but great life, saying thus: ââ¬Å"My wish would be simply to present it to thee plain and unadorned, without any embellishment of preface or uncountable muster of customary sonnets, epigrams, and eulogies, such as are commonly put at the beginning of books. â⬠(Cervantes, page__). The second part of the novel reveals a similar contention, this time uttered by Cide Hamete Benengeli in Chapter LXXIV. The reputed father of Don Quixote de La Mancha, Benengeli says, ââ¬Å"For me alone Don Quixote was born and I for him. His was the power of action, mine of writing. â⬠(Cervantes, page ___). By repeating these contentions, Miguel de Cervantes emphasizes and reiterates the idea that Don Quixote is a real character, a man who is not merely a product of a novelistââ¬â¢s imagination, but a tangible entity. Cervantes and his phantom figure, Benengeli, claim that they are merely recorders of Don Quixoteââ¬â¢s deeds and misdeeds. Cervantes declares thus in his preface: ââ¬Å"In belief of the good reception and honours that Your Excellency bestows on all sort of books, as prince so inclined to favor good arts, chiefly those who by their nobleness do not Customerââ¬â¢s last name 2 submit to the service and bribery of the vulgar, I have determined bringing to light The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of la Mancha. â⬠(Cervantes, page__). Cervantes distances himself from the character by saying that he is merely a recorder of a personââ¬â¢s history, not a creator of a person so intriguingly chivalrous and comical at the same time. In doing so, Cervantes strengthens the character of Don Quixote, making him a mystery, and an enigma. Was he real, or was he imaginary? This intriguing question has kept readers all over the world and across generations to keep turning the pages of this humorous novel, and in this respect, Cervantes achieves his triumph in making the adventures of a tragic and comic knight-errant, a very engaging read. The two mentioned passages delineating one contention are significant in the reading of the novel as a whole. Promoting Don Quixote as a tangible entity, a real character, makes the novel more humorous, more effective, and more influential; the themes and sentiments imbibed in the story are therefore communicated more strongly. Cervantes provides a critical commentary on the Spanish lifestyle and morals at the time the novel was written, and one way to take a humorous novel seriously, is to project it as a palpable, realistic account of one personââ¬â¢s adventures and misadventures. This in itself is an ingenious literary style. Making Don Quixote an enigma and claiming that he is real, reflects the ridiculous and preposterous nature of the novel. Cervantes is ultimately making a literary statement: that in a world and in a time when chivalric ideals are appropriate, yet overrated, a society that is suspended between the grandiose aspects of chivalry and the humility of noble chivalric ideals must examine its principles very closely. If it fails to do, it may likewise fight windmills instead of giants, and therein lays a societal problem too unbelievably difficult to overcome. Works Cited Cervantes, M. Don Quixote. The Language Gap Essay -- Language Development, Mastering Language
Mastering language is an important milestone in human development. When language is developed, the world opens up and a person is able to communicate their needs and interact in a meaningful way. Psychologist Lev Vygotsky even believes language is the most important tool we have in learning. Our basic learning skills are taught to us through an "informal education system consisting of parents, other grown-ups, peers and even the media" (Sigelman, C. & Rider, E., 2009, pg. 277). Formal education then takes over, teaching the language skills necessary to read, write and problem solve. Both formal and informal education play a large part in development and when one of these is compromised language development can suffer. Infancy and early childhood are an important time in language development. Infants are unable to say meaningful words in the first 10 to 13 months of their lives, however this does not mean they are doing nothing these months. Infants are using this time to listen to the speech that is going on around them, absorbing these words and sounds for use at a later point in their development. According to research infants are able to distinguish between phonemes, or the building blocks of words. These are sounds like b, p, and t. Infants also display evidence that they understand word segmentation, and understand a sentence is not one long word, but a string of several words put together. They are also sensitive to the intonation of language as well. This is the variations in pitch, speed and loudness used when we talk, so "before they ever speak a word, infants areâ⬠¦sensitive to the fact that speech falls between clauses, phrases, and words rather than in the middle of these i mportant language units" (Sigel... ...o find time to interact with their children if they are having to work all day to support their family. A solution to this problem might be to provide financial support to these parents so one of them would be able to work a part-time job. This would give these parents more time to interact with their children, with out devastating their finances. When the children are able to enter pre-school programs then the assistance could end and the parent could return to full time employment. Informal and formal education, are important parts of a child's language development. Often, the children of underprivileged families experience deficiencies in their informal education, putting them behind their privileged peers when they enter kindergarten. This is why support programs and programs to educate underprivileged mothers and their children are so important.

The Beginnings of a National Literary Tradition Essay -- Canadian Hist
The Beginnings of a National Literary Tradition à à à à à Canadians throughout their history have been concerned over the status of their national literature. One of the major problems facing early Canadian writers was that the language and poetic conventions that they had inherited from the Old World were inadequate for the new scenery and conditions in which they now found themselves. Writers such as Susanna Moodie, Samuel Hearne, and Oliver Goldsmith were what I would consider "Immigrant" authors. Even though they were writing in Canada about Canada their style and their audiences were primarily England and Europe. These authors wrote from an Old World perspective and therefore were not truly Canadian authors. It took a group of homespun young writers in the later part of the 19thCentury to begin to build a genuine "discipline" of Canadian literary thought. This group, affectionately known as ââ¬Ë The Confederation Poets', consisted of four main authors: Charles G.D. Roberts, Bliss Carman, Duncan Campbell Scott, and Archibald Lampman. The Poets ofConfederation "established what can legitimately be called the first distinct "school" of Canadian poetry"(17, Keith). The term ââ¬ËThe Poets of Confederation' is a misnomer since not one of these poets/authors was more than ten years old when the Dominion of Canada was formed in 1867. However, all of these writers were aware of the lack of a distinctive Canadian literary tradition and they made efforts to create one for their successors. While each of these men had their own distinctive writing style they all sought to contribute and create a ââ¬Ë national' literature. According to R.E.Rashley in Poetry in Canada: The First Three Steps " there is no Canadian poetry before [The Confederation Poets] time"(98). These men were the first in a long line of authors and artists to conceive of the need for a discernible national literature. The Confederation Poets function was to "explore the new knowledge that they had acquired of themselves that had been created by the interaction of environment and people and the concept of evolutionary growth"(Rashley 98). Archibald Lampman was a key note in the beginnings of a national literary movement. The other village, Mbabane killed a woman from Jamaica and a young virgin and Shameful was given to the village as a peace offering. Awoken Was troubled by his death because he became like a son to him. Shameful even referred to Awoken as his father. Awoken was hurt because he looked at him as his own, but out of pride, he participated in his murder. In fact, he dealt the final blow to kill him. 4. Beriberi was Ginkgo's friend. When Awoken visited him after the killing of Shameful, Beriberi told him that he should not have participated in the ailing of Shameful since Awoken had grown him up like his own son.He said that the Earth Goddess could wipe out an entire family for this type of action. Beriberi refusal to participate in the killing of Shameful in light of Ginkgo's action showed that he was wise and had a different temperament from Awoken. Where Awoken is volatile and prone to action, Beriberi is thoughtful, even philosophic. Beriberi did not believe that slaying one's child w as necessary to gain the admiration or approval of the rest of the clan. Beriberi believed in performing actions that were pleasing to God and not rely acting to seem strong in the eyes of men. 5.Eczema was Ginkgo's daughter. She was more of a boy than a girl, in terms of her attitude and behavior. He preferred her and wished she was a boy more than his son Known. She understood him. 6. An cabbage child is a child that has an evil spirit. This type of evil child when born, will die and implant himself/herself in its mother's womb to be reborn as a means of tormenting its mother and family. Kefir was known to have cabbage children. At the death of her third child, Niobium, Awoken ladled in another medicine-man, Gabble Nanny, who ordered that there be no mourning for the dead child.Gabble took a razor and mutilated the dead child's body. He then took it away to bury in the Evil Forest holding it by the ankle and dragging it on the ground behind him. He did this as a way Of discouragin g the evil spirit or cabbage child from coming again. 7. Awoken was exiled because he unintentionally shot and killed a clansman during the funeral festivities for Queued. Awoken had committed a female crime because his act was done inadvertently. The sixteen year old boy who had been killed was the son of Queued.Awoken was exiled in order to cleanse the land he had polluted by shedding the blood of a clansman and to exact punishment for an offence he had committed against the great Earth goddess. 8. Awoken feared becoming like his father Look who was lazy, improvident and quite incapable of making provisions for the future. He held no titles, owed many people, was weak and womanish and hated the sight of blood. He had only one wife and owned no barns. Awoken tried to distance himself room his father's legacy by being a fearless wrestler who defeated Emailing the Cat.He held titles, had three wives and several barns of yams. He was courageous and took charge of his family with a hea vy hand. Ginkgo's pride and fears contributed to his downfall because he tried so hard to distance himself from his fathers legacy that he ignored the advice of elders such as Gibbous Queued who told Awoken not to take part in the killing of Shameful. The Oracle of Hills and the Caves had pronounced Snakeskin's death. Awoken did not listen though. He had to prove his manliness/ trench by showing he was not afraid of blood.
